Pull Request: Code Maintainability Improvements for v0.8.1
Documentation home ยท Current changelog
Historical development record. This PR summary describes the v0.8.1 development state and is not current setup, support, or API guidance.
Audience: maintainers researching earlier implementation decisions.
Summary#
This PR implements comprehensive maintainability improvements to the ThreadSafeCollections-FP codebase, focusing on code organization, documentation quality, and consistency while maintaining 100% backward compatibility.
Changes Overview#
๐ง Code Quality Improvements#
- Files Modified: 7 files (+136 lines, ~48 lines changed)
- Test Suite: All 118+ tests passing โ
- Memory Safety: 100% cleanup rate (0 leaks) โ
- API Compatibility: 100% backward compatible โ
Key Improvements#
1. Algorithm Complexity Annotations#
Added Big-O complexity documentation to all 80+ interface methods in ThreadSafeCollections.Interfaces.pas.
Benefits:
- Developers can see performance characteristics in IDE tooltips
- Clear expectations for algorithm performance
- Better informed API usage decisions
Example:
/// <summary>Adds an item to the end of the list</summary>
/// <complexity>O(1) amortized, O(n) worst case during resize</complexity>
function Add(const Item: T): Integer;2. Centralized Error Messages#
Created new unit ThreadSafeCollections.ErrorMessages.pas with 14 standardized error constants.
Benefits:
- Consistent error messages across all collections
- Easier future localization
- Single source of truth for error text
- Replaced 23 scattered string literals
Constants Added:
ERR_INDEX_OUT_OF_BOUNDSERR_LIST_EMPTY,ERR_DEQUE_EMPTYERR_DUPLICATE_KEY,ERR_KEY_NOT_FOUNDERR_COMPARER_REQUIRED- And 8 more...
3. Named Constants for Magic Numbers#
Added 10+ well-named constants to replace magic numbers in ThreadSafeCollections.List.pas and ThreadSafeCollections.Deque.pas.
TThreadSafeList Constants:
DEFAULT_INITIAL_CAPACITY = 16
MIN_CAPACITY = 4
SMALL_LIST_THRESHOLD = 64
GROWTH_FACTOR_DOUBLE = 2
GROWTH_FACTOR_LARGE_NUMERATOR = 3
GROWTH_FACTOR_LARGE_DENOMINATOR = 2
ARRAY_ALIGNMENT = 16TThreadSafeDeque Constants:
DEFAULT_INITIAL_CAPACITY = 16
MIN_CAPACITY = 4
GROWTH_FACTOR = 24. Hash Table Documentation#
Added cross-reference documentation to ThreadSafeCollections.Dictionary.pas and ThreadSafeCollections.HashSet.pas documenting ~200-300 lines of shared hash table patterns.
Benefits:
- Documents code duplication for future refactoring
- Explains architectural relationships
- Helps maintainers understand design decisions
5. Memory Leak Fix#
Fixed memory leak in test suite at threadsafelisttests.pas:288.
Issue: Test was creating new list without freeing previous instance Fix: Added FIntList.Free; before reassignment Result: 100% memory cleanup - 0 unfreed blocks out of 737,867 allocations
Testing#
All improvements verified with comprehensive test suite:
Heap dump by heaptrc unit of tests\threadsafecollectionstests.exe
737867 memory blocks allocated : 110311807/120134808
737867 memory blocks freed : 110311807/120134808
0 unfreed memory blocks : 0โ All 118+ unit tests passing โ Zero memory leaks โ 100% backward compatible โ No behavioral changes
